2. Proteins in transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene regulation
Gene expression is regulated dependent on cell differentiation and environmental conditions. This happens first at the level of transcription. Changes in chromatin structure by histone modification but also in the DNA itself play important roles in it. However, in the more recent past, regulation at the level of the following steps in RNA maturation and RNA-function have also become a focus of attention. Processing of the RNA, its localization and transport as well as translation and finally degradation of the RNA can all contribute to gene regulation.
